Goodby for Now
Friday, Sept. 7th
5:00-8:00pm at Waucoma Bookstore

Waucoma Bookstore is hosting author Laurie Frankel for an author reception on Friday, Sept. 7th from 5:00-8:00pm at the bookstore (212 Oak St., Hood River).  Frankel will be discussing and signing her new book Goodbye for Now.   Fresh, intelligent, moving, and clever, Laurie Frankel explores the nature of love and loss in Goodbye for Now, a charming and humanely bittersweet love story for the 21st century.

About the Book
Sam Elling is a computer whiz working at an internet dating company in Seattle. He is smart, funny, and like many singles in their thirties, looking for someone to share his life with – so when he cannot find a date, he brilliantly creates an algorithm that will systematically match you with your soul mate. His program works so well that he immediately meets his perfect match, Meredith Maxwell, and instantly falls in love. He loses his job (because guaranteed matches on your first date are naturally bad for business), but he’s gained the love of his life and is in no rush to find other work.

Sam and Meredith’s giddy romance is brought to an abrupt halt when Meredith’s grandmother, Livvie, suddenly passes away. Sam puts his computer genius to use again and creates a program that allows Meredith to have one last conversation with her beloved grandmother – the gift of an opportunity to say goodbye. The program allows Meredith and Livvie to email back and forth, text and even have live video chats. Meredith embraces simulated Livvie more than Sam ever expected and he begins to wonders if this is something that could genuinely help people cope with their grief. He and Meredith set out to bring the
technology to the world.

A community soon forms – it seems that everyone has someone they wish to talk to one last time. But going public is more difficult than Sam and Meredith anticipated. There are those that cannot seem to let go and the boundaries of man and machine are tested and reinvented. Sam and Meredith’s affection for each other deepens into the kind of love that once tasted, you cannot live without. But what if unexpectedly, one of them had to?

In the spirit of One Day, Goodbye for Now will lovingly wash over your heart and leave you faced with an important question: If you had the chance to speak with your departed loved one, would you take it?
