In the Shadow of the Cypress

This book is a well-written historical tale about the Chinese coming to the American west coast before Columbus touched the eastern shores. A cypress tree in the Monterey Peninsula holds ancient relics which the local fisherman Chinese population is ancient to protect even from the powerful Chinese tongs in San Francisco. Alternating between the 1906 era and modern day, the plot is well-crafted and characters fully drawn.
