The Crimes of Paris
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Bison Books, 10/2010
Paris at the turn of the century -- city of light, city of decadence, poised on the cusp of modernity. This book is about the theft of the Mona Lisa from the Louvre in 1911, but the authors also explore in detail many related -- and intriguing -- topics: forensic science, art history, detective fiction, and the character of Paris itself at this unique point in history. The atuhors' engaging style -- scholarly in scope yet compulsively readable -- brings the setting alive through fascinating details and stranger-than-fiction anecdotes.

This gripping YA thriller will suck you right in and not let go! In a future where technology is both ubiquitous and considered highly suspect, a cataclysmic societal upheaval resulted in the imprisonment of thousands of citizens in the seemingly endless prison Incarceron. Teenager Finn cannot remember a time when he was not a prisoner, but mysterious dreams -- and the discovery of a way to communicate with a girl named Claudia, who claims to live ouside Incarceron -- are making him doubt his memory. Claudia and Finn are likable characters, and the plot's twists, turns, and revelations will keep you hooked. I really enjoyed this one!

This is one of my top fantasy books of the year, for sure. It's set in Tombstone, AZ, and the unique Wild West setting -- drawn with vibrant, gritty detail -- makes the seemingly conventional central characters -- a young man somewhat resistantly diescovering his magical powers, an independent-minded young woman -- interesting and fresh. The wonderfully developed setting and characters make for a book that is by turns heart-poundingly gripping and heart-wrenchingly sweet...oh, and delightfully humorous too! Read it today!

In his latest sci-fi/mystery/thriller, Tim Powers delivers again: an impossible-to-summarize, brilliantly inventive novel that will take you along on an exciting, non-stop ride. When his grandmother dies, Frank Marrity disovers that she has been hiding a secret invention of Einstein's. But plenty of other people want Einstein's time-travel (and universe-altering) machine too -- people with a lot less scruples than Marrity. You won't be able to put this one down!

Another very enjoyable fantasy/adventure/romance from Sharon Shinn! Whether you're already a fan (like me!) or have yet to sample Shinn's delightful YA romances, you should give this one a try. It's unique and fully engaging and features a likeable young heroine, a loveable romantic hero, and a creepy villian! Far from predictable, though, this book will keep you guessing -- once I'd started it, it absorbed literally every spare minute I had until I'd finished it!

If you loved The Lord of the Rings and especially The Silmarillion, you have to read this book! Mythic in feel but focused on the life story of a single character, Turin, this beautifully-written book reads like a cross between these two. The story ifs full of adventure, romance, and tragedy -- a powerful new book finally released over 33 years after Tolkien's death. Don't miss it!

This action-packed novel is the perfect leisure read for teen and pre-teen boys -- exciting, fast-paced, and full of gorgeous fanciful artwork (check out the map inside the front cover!). This steampunk adventure reimagines World War I Europe as divided between Clankers, who use advanced mechanical technology, and Darwinists, who harness the power of DNA to create fantastical hybrid living creatures. The guys are really going to enjoy this one!

A fun, colorful, romantic novel for teens. Sharon Shinn's YA books all feature likeable heroines, colorful settings, and interesting ideas, with a touch (or more) of romance. Here, Averie finds herself at odds with her nation's imperalist tendencies -- and with her fiance, who is a military officer. Before she has made her own final choice, she will be tested by betrayal...and love.
