I love reading Sherlock Holmes spinoffs, and Horowitz is one of the best out there. This mystery, set just after the "death" of Holmes at Reichenbach Falls, features a pair of detectives with a definite Holmes-Watson dynamic. Each suspects that Moriarty may have survived the encounter with Holmes and may still be wreaking havoc in London. Full of red herrings & ground-shifting plot twists, this book will make you want to start rereading as soon as you finish it!
Wow, I loved this book! A powerful yet conflicted heroine, living in a world reminiscent of an 18th century Versailles threatened by a forest out of Grimm's darkest fairy tales.... I loved Cruel Beauty but I loved this one even more. High-stakes action, romance, darkness & redemption... this book is can't-put-it-down fantastic!
A smart, compulsively readable fantasy romance with echoes of Beauty and the Beast, Greek mythology, and a downright creepy Bluebeard element? Yes please! This unconventional fairy tale will keep you guessing until the last page (no guarantees you won't be reading that page at 1:30 a.m. like I did)! ~Sasha
The Peculiar was one of my favorite books last year, and Bachmann has outdone himself with this second novel -- another creepy, page-turning, well-crafted tale set in a unique vision of steampunk/faerie England. Bartholomew will do anything to rescue his sister Hettie from her Fae captors, but little does he realize he's about to find himself in the middle of a war for England! (The Whatnot is a sequel, but reads fine on its own -- though you really shouldn't miss The Peculiar either!) ~Sasha
At once an imaginative fantasy, a mystery, and a sensitive portrayal of a young protagonist on the autism spectrum, this book is unique -- and beautifully written, and touching, and creepy, and heart-warming. Just when Oscar feels like his whole world is falling apart, he discovers the importance of courage and the power of friendship. Just plain wonderful! ~Sasha
Steampunk time-travel? Faerie tale? Mystery-thriller? However you want to classify this latest genre-buster by Catherine Fisher, you definitely won't want to put it down! Suspense builds as surprising twists pile up and we wonder whom we can trust in this exciting adventure. I'm already looking forward to the sequel! ~Sasha
Yes, this book is just as interesting as you might guess from the cover! But in between the lurid bits, you'll learned a whole lot about the world's deadliest virus -- which traveling through millennia and around the globe -- and the terror, confusion, and brilliance it has inspired. Science books just don't get more page-turning than this one! ~Sasha
A vivid, haunting, unforgettable tale of childhood, innocence and its loss, love, and sacrifice. This book is vintage Neil Gaiman, which means it's gorgeously written, creepy, compelling, unpredictable, and powerfully effective. Whether it's your first Gaiman book or your tenth, do yourself a favor and read it! ~Sasha
