I love reading Sherlock Holmes spinoffs, and Horowitz is one of the best out there. This mystery, set just after the "death" of Holmes at Reichenbach Falls, features a pair of detectives with a definite Holmes-Watson dynamic. Each suspects that Moriarty may have survived the encounter with Holmes and may still be wreaking havoc in London. Full of red herrings & ground-shifting plot twists, this book will make you want to start rereading as soon as you finish it!
Wow, I loved this book! A powerful yet conflicted heroine, living in a world reminiscent of an 18th century Versailles threatened by a forest out of Grimm's darkest fairy tales.... I loved Cruel Beauty but I loved this one even more. High-stakes action, romance, darkness & redemption... this book is can't-put-it-down fantastic!
Masterman's Rage Against the Dying was a powerful first foray into the mystery & suspense genre. Fear the Darkness is even moreso. People you think you know & love are not who you think they are at all! Brigid is @ her most vulnerable in a deadly cat & mouse game between two women. Is it her niece, Gemma Kate or her BFF Mallory who are trying to bring her life to an end? Dear Reader -- this Reviewer will not tell! Work your way through to a satisfying ending.
Hands down, this title is Kathy Reich's most psychologically chilling book to date. Murders of children (in this story, girls ages 12 & up) are always troubling but in this case, the methods used & the killer is especially terrifying. Tempe Brennan is being taunted with these murders which have movd from Canada to the USA. Not only that, but after a nearly 30 year absence, the killer is back. Follow Tempe, Ryan (sexy, but troubled Canadian cop) & Skinny (obese, slovenly, but smart detective) as they work against time to a resolution of the murders.
Food: A Love Story by Jim Gaffigan. If you're old enough to remember the Life cereal commercials with Mikey "who'll eat any thing" you'll appreciate Jim's homage to food & eating. WARNING!! Do not eat & drink while reading this book, you'll either choke to death or spew liquid from your nose & mouth - it's funny! Because Jim is a successful stand up comedian, he travels extensively & eats the same way. Descriptors are hilarious, as are imagined interactions between the "eatie" (Jim's term - he's not a foodie!) & whoever he's talking with. Some might consider the humor low brow, but then they're probably snobby & don't find much humor in anything. - Kathy
