The Land of Marvels
The Land of Marvels by Barry Unsworth deserved the Booker Prize. This novel is historical fiction at its best. Set in 1914 in the northern Iran / Iraq area, this story of a British archeologist intersects with the German railway project and the desires of one Arab and the ambitions of a rogue American. Well drawn characters, a deep sense of place and a clear understanding of the multiple interests involved in the area make this book a fascinating read...and a good look at the beginning of the mid-East oil conflict.
