If you haven't yet sampled Charles Todd's World War I mysteries, you're lucky – you have many hours of riveting reading ahead of you! Having now devoured every last one in print, I'm reduced to waiting impatiently for the next installment. The Ian Rutledge novels are not just well-crafted, absorbing detective stories – though they are certainly that. They're also a powerful, nuanced portrait of war-haunted England as well as of one survivor struggling with his own personal demons.
