The Postmistress
by Sarah Blake
Penguin, $25.95

It's 1940 and tensions about war are increasing on the East Coast of America.  A young doctor, newly married, chooses to go help the wounded in London.  The dynamics fo the plot are set: the doctor's pregnant wife, the postmistress of their small town, an the American female journalist in London find their lives interwoven by love and war.  Frankie, the journalist, is compelling as she insists on traveling in war-torn Europe to record refugee stories in an effort to involve Americans against the brutality in Europe.  Rich local color and characters -- this is a very satisfying read.
